PROFILE

Edward Travis, president and owner of Edward F. Travis, Co., Inc. in Mobile, is a registered forester, member of the Association of Consulting Foresters and qualifying broker for Travis Timberlands. They work with clients across the board in terms of acreage, working to help anyone with a forestry problem that they can offer feasible solutions.

For individual landowners, highly mechanized, efficient logging often presents a challenge in harvesting timber on smaller tracts. Travis said that landowners sometimes need to coordinate with adjoining tracts to provide enough wood to mobilize a logging crew. Industry consolidation and mill quotas on the amount and kind of wood accepted add further constraints. Consulting foresters can be invaluable to landowners in providing the knowledge necessary to take advantage of spot markets as they develop.

“Preparation and timing of timber sales right now are as critical as they have ever been in history,” Travis said. He believes his company’s strength is the ability to see the forest for the trees. Instead of losing sight of the big picture, they consider all internal and external factors necessary to make the best recommendations to clients. Travis also brings his forest management skills into play in real estate sales and acquisitions. “My company often manages tracts after a sale, so I feel that my responsibility as a broker runs deeper than the typical broker,” he said. “We've got to do it right at every level, every time.”
