PROFILE

For John Pirtle of Pirtle Forestry Services, forestry isn’t just a profession—it’s a way of life. With decades of experience in the industry—and a career that has included time with the FBI, the U.S. Army, Auburn University, Union Camp Corporation, and the Alabama Forestry Commission—John has seen Alabama’s forests change and adapt, much like the landowners he serves.

Today, John works with two primary types of clients: families who’ve inherited smaller, divided plots of land, and larger landowners investing in forested property for recreation and relaxation. Both groups present their own challenges. Smaller parcels can be difficult to manage effectively, while larger tracts often come with ambitious goals—restoration, conversion, or even a complete transformation of the landscape. "Forestry takes time," Pirtle explained. "You have to guide landowners through the process and align their objectives with what the land can provide."

Central Alabama’s longleaf pine ecosystem is at the heart of John’s work. Whether he’s replanting longleaf on former industrial lands or creating open pastures, he enjoys crafting management plans that honor both the land’s potential and the owner’s vision. "I love being outside, helping landowners, and exploring new places," he said. "That’s what keeps me going."
