PROFILE
Though
born and raised in Birmingham, life as a
forester has taken Douglas McConnell all
over the country. After graduating from
Sewanee, he moved to North Carolina to
pursue a master’s degree at Duke
University before relocating to Idaho
for a doctoral program. After then
teaching at the University of Florida,
Douglas and his wife, Sara—also a
consulting forester—moved back to
Alabama. Appropriately, the move back
was to care for family forestland in
Coosa County. This property was the
precise spot he visited as a child that
fueled his interest in forestry. “My
grandparents owned it when I was a
child, and it’s certainly where my
attraction to caring for the forest
began,” McConnell said.
From that family land just outside of
Rockford, McConnell works with his wife
at Forest Owner Services, where in
addition to caring for family property
he assists clients with any and all
forest management needs. “It’s
gratifying to work with property
owners,” he said. “For some of the
properties we’re working with the next
generation, and it’s great to help them
care for the land.”
