Charles Ledbetter knew rather early on in life precisely what he wanted to do for a career. “By the time I was in 9th grade, I knew I wanted to be a forester,” he explained.

Though no one in his family was in the industry, he learned about the occupation through others within the community, so that’s exactly what he did. After graduating from Auburn University, he went into his first job in the industry, which was working for Scotch Plywood and moved him to Meridian, Mississippi. After a few years, a round of layoffs took his job. “I started looking for another job, but I kept getting calls from people needing this or that,” he said.

Those phone calls soon turned into his own business, C. Ledbetter Forestry Consultant. Though still based in Mississippi, Ledbetter continues to offer land management services to private landowners in Alabama as well. From timber sales and replanting to site prep, he offers clients a variety of services all aimed at their specific needs. “It’s complete customized management,” he said. “Every tract of timber is like every landowner—there are no two exactly the same.”
