Rick Johnson discovered at an early age that forestry was his passion. Already an avid fan of the outdoors, it only took watching one of his best friends’ dad, who was a forester, to decide that the career path was right for him too. After graduating from Auburn University with his degree in forest management, Johnson jumped right in.

After a few various jobs in the industry — which included stints at Resource Management Service, Georgia-Pacific, Hammermill Paper, and the University of Alabama — Johnson decided it was time to start his own forestry consulting business. So in 1987, he and a business partner started Tuskaloosa Forestry Services, where he works with clients all over west Alabama and east Mississippi on forest and timber management, reforestation, timber appraisals, and mapping services. In total, the company manages approximately 80,000 acres of timberland owned by private landowners. “We really enjoy working with our clients,” said Johnson. “It’s the people that have kept me in the industry all these years. A lot of our clients have become good friends. It’s a good industry to be in, and I wouldn’t change anything if I could.”
