PROFILE
Anna Haigler Johnson of Haigler Forestry and Wildlife Management in Shorter said that one of the best parts about being a forester is being able to see firsthand the results of her work. As a one-woman shop, she’s often in the field preparing for timber sales, doing things like marking boundaries, painting Streamside Management Zones, marking timber, preparing maps, and appraising before she even gets to the stage of representing her clients’ interests with loggers or timber buyers. During harvesting, she’s meeting loggers onsite and checking in regularly, and then involved with cleanup and eventual reforestation, if that’s in the landowner’s plan. A typical timber sale can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Johnson works primarily with private landowners, from dozens of acres to thousands, and with a wide range of objectives for their land. She’s meticulous at all stages and doesn't just want the work done well, but she said, “I probably take more time than I should sometimes because I want to make sure it looks right.” One of the things she tries to make sure she gives her clients is a sense of how to manage now for future generations. “A lot of people own land hoping that it stays in the family for a long time. I do management plans that will set it up so their children and grandchildren will all benefit from what we’re doing now.”
