PROFILE

Joe Eiland of Eiland Forestry and Real Estate in Trussville has more than 40 years of consulting experience, and before that grew up around the family sawmill, a small mill but large enough to employ a mule-powered crew. He worked for a large firm right out of college and was one half of Hatcher and Eiland Forestry for a number of years, in both cases focusing often on large tracts of managed timber across the country, from Douglas fir in Utah to large stands of cherry in Pennsylvania. Now he works primarily with smaller private landowners to make and implement management plans that both coincide with their recreational goals and steward the land for future generations.

He most enjoys conversations with clients who have a multi-generational relationship with the land. “You can learn a lot from somebody that's been on a piece of land or owned a piece of land their whole life. It's very interesting the reason why they planted here or cleared here – it’s just a real story they have.”

Eiland said one of the biggest challenges of his career was the aftermath of the massively destructive tornadoes of April 2011. “The mapping, damage appraisal, timber salvage, seeding, and replanting of these tracts was one of the most challenging jobs I’ve handled,” he said. “There wasn’t anything else quite like it.”
