Credible Sources for News and Information in
2020
Lynn Brooks, the news director and anchor for
WVUA 23 in Tuscaloosa, was scheduled to speak at the 2020 AFOA Annual
Meeting this year. As an adjunct instructor at the University of Alabama and
an award-winning journalist--and forest landowner-- we thought Ms. Brooks would be a great
Alabama-based expert to speak about credibility and the media. Social media
disinformation has received a lot of attention, and after the national and
local news landscape has shifted so much in the last few years, many are looking for
sources of news--especially local news--they can trust.

Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs)
Dr. Becky Barlow
is Extension Coordinator & Professor, Forest Measurements & Management
at Auburn University's
School of Forestry and Wildlife Management. Dr. Barlow is a prolific
source of practical information for forest owners, like this video showing
how to use a
pinestraw baler. Pinestraw is just one of the non-timber revenue
sources that forest owners might consider. We found Dr. Barlow's article
Markets and Market Values for Non-Timber Forest Products and asked her to
speak with us about some of these products and how landowners can get
started as a NTFP producer.

Jeff Clements, Vice-President of Sales at
Honest Abe Log Homes , was also scheduled to speak at the 2020 AFOA Annual
Meeting this year. We're not sure if there will be a run on log homes in
light of this year's events, but building a comfortable cabin on your forest
property can give you an additional way to enjoy your land. Jeff will talk
to us about today's log homes and what you should know if you're
dreaming of a getaway in the woods.
See some available designs:
The Monticello, a 624-foot cabin with a loft
The Meridian: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2 floors in 1,456 sq. feet

Tom Brickman,
Managing Broker & Principal at
Cyprus Partners,
was also a scheduled speaker at this year's Annual Meeting. Tom works with
realtors and foresters statewide and we've always found him to be a
straightforward and trustworthy person to deal with. There are a lot of good
reasons to think about selling forestland right now. Tom will speak to us about
what you should do or avoid doing when making the decision to sell.
