PROFILE
Sizemore and Sizemore, Inc. in Tallassee, was formed in 1949 by Dr. William Sizemore and Attorney Mary Sizemore, a husband and wife team. Dr. Sizemore’s Ph.D. in timberland appraisal made him one of the area’s foremost experts in the subject, and appraisals are still one of the company’s primary areas of specialty. “We appraise timberlands from Texas to Virginia,” said company chairman Jack Fillingham. He said the process has changed a great deal, largely because of computers taking the place of pencil-and-paper work. “We can do a 100,000 acre appraisal probably within two weeks after they give us all the data. When I started, it would have taken us maybe half a year to appraise a tract of land that size.” A satellite office in Sylacauga expands the consultancy’s reach, offering forest management services in a 15-county range. Forester Shannon White heads up the Sylacauga office, which has a staff of four to manage roughly 85 thousand acres in that part of the state. Between the two offices, they have 10 foresters and five appraisers, some of whom wear both hats. They’ve weathered many industry changes, such as the breakup of large, industry owned tracts of land over the southeast. However, Sizemore & Sizemore keeps the hallmarks of its founders: special expertise in timberland appraisals and the tight-knit spirit of a family business.
